Background on The Study

Carol Fiore, M.S., M.E.S.,conducted a 2 year study of domestic cats which revealed shocking trends. The research project called "The Ecological Effects of Urban Domestic Cats (Felis catus) on Birds in the City of Wichita, Kansas" was conducted out of Wichita State University (WSU) as a thesis project in the Department of Biological Sciences. The project was planned with the assistance of ecologist Dr. Karen Brown Sullivan. Data collection started in May 1998. The study involved the use of 41 cats and their owners, randomly distributed inside the city limits of Wichita, Kansas.
Methodology included:

• bird collection (Please note: This phase of the project required state and federal collecting permits!)
• analysis of cat fecal material
• radio tracking of cats
• a random telephone survey
• compilation of data from various sources to determine cat density
• conversations with city officials and an attorney concerning cat regulations
• an extensive literature search for studies concerning birds and cats
